Information on the the Wii was shrouded in the traditional secrecy we have come to expect from Nintendo but that veil was completely lifted (as far as we know) at Nintendo’s official press conference on September 14th 2006 in New York City and through various third party press releases throughout the day. Saturo Iwata the president of Nintendo has always said that the Wii is not expected to take the path the other players are taking with spectacular specs, and complicated controllers but many gamers who grew up thinking next gen just means better graphics are in for a surprise.

20 years of Metroid 1up.com article - Part III

Timothy Jones, the founder of The Metroid Headquarters thinks Metroid Fusion’s straightforward story helped cement Samus as a character. “We knew Samus enlisted in the Galactic Federation Police, but she left out of grief following the death of her Commander, Adam Malkovich. She enlisted her services as a freelance bounty Hunter, and has been called on by the Federation because of her superior skills and sense of justice.” Metroid Fusion’s story did explore Samus’ relationship with the Federation–both past and present–and the return of Metroid’s classic exploratory gameplay, however linear, was welcomed back.

In Metroid’s Gameboy sequel, Metroid 2: The Return of Samus, Samus travels to the Metroid’s point of origin, a planet known as SR388. The desolate environment proves a perfect grounds for Metroids to spawn and evolve into deadlier incarnations, from the juvenile Alpha Metroid to the huge and lethal Omega Metroid. To eliminate the threat of the Metroid species, Samus locates and destroys each parasite, including the Queen Metroid. On the way back to her ship, she encounters one last hatchling who clings to her–metaphorically, thankfully–after seemingly imprinting Samus as its mommy. Samus, fresh from taking great pains to eradicate the Metroids, knew it was logical to dispose of the creature.

Metroid’s celebrated exploration-oriented gameplay debuted twenty years ago, and the legend of Samus herself debuted when she took off her clothes.Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System was a strange departure from standard adventures offered on the console at the time. Instead of scrolling the screen to the right as the hero hopped and bopped, Metroid’s gameplay had the space warrior Samus scaling and descending huge vertical shafts, searching endlessly for hidden passages, and even rolling up like a potato bug to get through tight squeezes. Also unlike many early NES games, players could backtrack. In fact, retracing steps and using acquired power-ups to reach previously inaccessible areas was essential to finishing the game successfully and witnessing one of video gaming’s most famous endings: Samus’ garish space armor falls away and thousands of pre-teen boys had to come to grips with the fact Mother Brain had just been wasted by a cootie-infested girl.
