Super Metroid number 7 on Top 100 List

Written by Taino on December 3, 2007

Super Metroid has made the top 10 list of IGN’s top 100 games of all time, coming in at number 7.

It’s not hard to love Samus Aran. A smoking hot babe with a huge gun always deserves praise. It also helps that she stars in some of the best games ever made. While her 3D endeavors are stellar, Super Metroid for the SNES still holds a place as a defining action platformer that raised the bar for story at atmosphere, as well as gameplay.

Solid platforming, combined with a plethora of powerups and some truly epic boss battles are just some of the highlights of the game. Part of what made Super Metroid so great was the non linear approach and secret areas that made exploration so key to beating the game. It’s a technique that’s been used by many other titles, including some of the later Castlevania series. Super Metroid also created a world that really sucked the player in. The use of music and the environments create a sense of isolation and desperation that few games this day have been able to achieve as well.

Super Metroid wasn’t necessarily graphically astounding, but it had an artistic vision that never let up, contributing to the fluidity of the game.

Metroid Prime 3 Review Round-up

Written by Taino on October 8, 2007

Metroid Prime 3 has been out for over a month now and all the major gaming websites and publications has reviewed Samus’ latest adventure and final chapter of the Prime trilogy. Below is a sample of 3 reviews from respected websites and links to the full reviews as well as the review video from Gametrailers.com

Gamespot.com Review:

While Metroid Prime spectacularly ushered Metroid gameplay into a 3D vision, Corruption is content to be a solid successor. Yet you shouldn’t let some spurts of predictability dissuade you from checking it out, particularly if you are a Metroid enthusiast.

1UP.com Review:

Amazing as it is to say about a Wii game, Corruption contains some of the best visuals in gaming, period. It can’t always mask the hardware’s technical limitations (pixelation every time you’re up close waiting for a door to open, for example), but in most cases the lighting, attention to detail, and wonderfully cohesive and imaginative art direction more than make up for the Wii’s lack of raw horsepower.

IGN.com Review:

Corruption is the evolution of the Prime series and a game that is very highly polished in nearly every respect. It’s got better control. Better pacing. Better visuals. Better cinematics. And better bonuses. Yet, even with all of these improvements, it still feels and looks very familiar to its predecessors, which is both a statement of praise and criticism.

Huh? Metroid purists will be crying foul, no doubt, but let us explain. Prime 3’s E3 2007 showing was heavy on gunning and light on the franchise’s traditional re-traversal puzzle-solving nature, and for the first time we’ve been forced to concede that Corruption is, technically, also a shooter. And what a shooter! Utilizing the accuracy and speed of the Wii remote, Retro Studios has delivered the most tightly-controlled first-person experience to grace any home console. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the game won’t ultimately fall in the adventure genre - actually, we suspect it will. Retro has promised even more exploration and puzzles for fans. Prime 3 also boasts some of the most atmospheric cinematics and story sequences in the series yet, not to mention some welcomed visual enhancements. Cleaner, crisper textures, bigger environments, advanced particle effects, bloom lighting and a true 16:9 widescreen mode to start. Early showings of Prime 3 didn’t exactly floor us, but we’re all-too happy to admit that the game has come together… and then some. The E3 2007 build of Corruption skyrocketed the title the top of our must-have lists.
